The short version
- A sealant is a protective layer that goes on after a full decontamination wash. Ours is a 6 month ceramic sealant, part of our Wash & Seal.
- A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and is rated for 1, 3 or 5 years, with paint correction first and a written warranty.
- Selling or trading in within a year: a sealant. Keeping the car for years: a coating.
Side by side
Wax is the oldest of the three. It looks good for a few weeks and then it is gone, which is why most drivers who want real protection end up choosing between a sealant and a coating. Here is how those two compare at our shop.
| At our shop | Sealant (Wash & Seal) | Ceramic coating |
|---|---|---|
| How long it lasts | About 6 months | 1, 3 or 5 years, by package |
| Prep first | Full decontamination wash | Decontamination and paint correction |
| Swirl removal | Not included | Included, before the coating |
| Time with us | About 1.5 hours | At least a full day |
| Where | Shop or mobile | Shop only |
| Price | From $139.99 | Quoted per vehicle |
From prices for a coupe or sedan in average condition. SUVs and trucks are quoted for their size.
What a sealant gets you
Our Wash & Seal is a full decontamination wash (iron, clay, bug, tar and sap removal), a wheel and tire deep clean and a 6 month ceramic sealant, in about 1.5 hours. It is from $139.99 for a coupe or sedan in average condition, and it is one of the services we can bring to your driveway with our mobile detailing.
A sealant makes the paint slick and glossy and puts a layer between it and road grime for a season. What it does not do is remove swirls. It goes on top of the paint you have. If you want the swirls gone too, Polish & Protect adds a one-step machine polish that removes roughly 60 to 70% of light swirls and scratches, sealed for 6 months, from $389.99.
What a coating gets you
A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and hardens into a thin, clear layer that is rated in years. We offer three: The Refresh for 1 year, The Revival for 3 years and The Renewal for 5 years.
Every package includes decontamination, paint correction before the coating, application by certified technicians and a cure in the shop. You leave with a written warranty and an aftercare guide, and you get a free follow-up wash with an inspection. Glass, wheels and trim can be coated in the same visit. A coating is priced for your vehicle once we know its size and how much correction the paint needs. See the ceramic coating packages for the details.
Which one fits
- You are selling, trading in or turning in a lease within a year. A sealant. There is no point paying for years of protection you will not use.
- You are keeping the car three years or more. A coating. The prep and correction are done once, and the protection carries through every winter after.
- The car lives outside or racks up winter highway miles. Salt and brine are where a coating earns its keep. It resists them for years instead of months.
- The paint is swirled or dull. Either way it needs correction if you want the gloss back: Polish & Protect with its sealant, or a coating package, where correction is included.
- It is a new car. New is the ideal time to coat, because the paint needs the least correction and it is protected from day one.
A Michigan winter is the real test
Road salt and brine sit on paint for months at a time here. A sealant put on in the fall is near the end of its 6 months by spring, so we suggest one at the end of winter and another at the end of summer. A coating keeps working through the whole season and the next one.
Whichever you choose, wash the salt off regularly through winter, and skip brush-style automatic washes: those spinning brushes put swirls in any finish, coated or sealed. Touchless washes are fine between hand washes.
