The short version
- A coating is a thin, hard, clear layer that bonds to your clear coat. It is rated in years, not weeks.
- It makes the car easier to wash, resists salt, UV fade and chemical etching, and keeps the gloss deep.
- It does not stop rock chips, door dings or key scratches. That job belongs to paint protection film.
- The paint gets corrected first, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it.
What a ceramic coating actually is
A ceramic coating is a liquid that goes on clean, bare paint by hand, one panel at a time. As it cures, it bonds to the clear coat and hardens into a thin, clear, glass-like layer. Wax and most sealants sit on top of the paint and wear away over weeks or months. A coating becomes part of the surface, which is why it is measured in years.
Our packages are built around that. The Refresh is a 1 year coating, The Revival is 3 years and the one most people choose, and The Renewal is 5 years. How long yours holds up depends mostly on how the car is stored and washed. A garaged car that gets hand washed will outlast one that lives outside and goes through a brush tunnel wash.
What it does for your paint
- Water and dirt slide off. Coated paint sheds water in beads, and the water takes loose dirt with it. Road grime and salt do not bond to a coating the way they bond to bare clear coat.
- Washing takes less time. A rinse and a gentle hand wash get a coated car clean in about half the time.
- It resists chemical etching. Bird droppings, tree sap, bug splatter and road salt eat into unprotected clear coat. A coating puts a barrier between them and the paint and buys you time to wash them off.
- It resists UV fade. Years of sun are what dull an unprotected finish. A coating helps the paint hold its color and depth.
- It keeps the gloss. The paint is corrected and then sealed, so the finish stays deep and slick between washes, and light marring from washing is reduced.
What it does not do
A coating is a chemical barrier, not armor. It will not stop rock chips on the hood, a door ding in a parking lot or a key scratch. If chips on the front end are your main worry, that is what paint protection film is for, and the two work well together.
It does not make a car self cleaning. You still wash it. It does not stop brush-style automatic washes from putting swirls in the paint either: those spinning brushes swirl any finish, coated or not. Touchless washes are fine.
And it does not fix damage that is already there. Swirls, scratches and oxidation under a coating stay under it, sealed in, which is why the next step matters most.
Why the paint gets corrected first
Every ceramic coating package we sell includes paint correction before the coating goes on. It is not an upsell. A coating is clear and it bonds to whatever is underneath, so coating over swirl marks seals them in for years. Here is the order the work happens in at our shop:
- Decontamination. Iron and tar removal and a clay treatment, so nothing is trapped under the coating.
- Paint correction. Machine polishing removes swirls, light scratches and oxidation from the clear coat. Paint is inspected under shop lighting.
- Panel wipe. Polishing oils come off so the coating bonds to bare paint.
- Application. Our certified technicians apply the coating panel by panel.
- Cure. The coating cures in the shop before you pick the vehicle up.
- Aftercare. You leave with a written warranty and an aftercare guide, and your free follow-up wash with an inspection is on the calendar.
How long it takes and what to expect
Plan on at least a full day, and longer when the paint needs more correction. The coating itself goes on fairly quickly. It is the decontamination, correction and cure that take the hours, and rushing any of them shows in the finish. We give you an exact window when we quote your vehicle.
Coating is done in the shop only, in enclosed bays with controlled lighting. Uber is covered for drop-off and pickup on coating jobs, or our pick-up and drop-off valet can collect the vehicle and bring it back. Glass, wheels and trim can be coated in the same visit, and coated glass is the one people underrate: rain sheets off at highway speed.
Is it worth it for your car?
A coating makes the most sense when you plan to keep the car for a few years, it spends winters in salt and brine, or it lives outside. New is the ideal time, because the paint needs the least correction and it is protected from day one. An older car with tired paint often shows the bigger change, because correction does more of the work.
If you are trading the car in next spring, you probably do not need years of protection. A Wash & Seal, with a full decontamination wash and a 6 month ceramic sealant from $139.99 for a coupe or sedan in average condition, may be all it needs. We would rather tell you that than sell you a coating you will not get the value from.
Coatings are quoted per vehicle, because size, paint condition and the amount of correction change the job. Tell us what you drive and we will give you a real number, usually in the same conversation. Request a free quote or call (586) 400-1303.
