What marks the paint
How West Bloomfield paint gets its swirls and scratches.
Most swirl marks are put there by washing the car, not by driving it. Around here there is a lot to clean off: county salt all winter, dust from gravel roads, and whatever the trees drop. This is how each one turns into marks, and what polishing can and cannot do about it.
A winter of tunnel washes
The Road Commission for Oakland County salts the paved roads and often brines the main ones before a storm, so a car here needs washing again and again until spring. Brush-style automatic washes put swirls in any finish. A one-step machine polish removes roughly 60 to 70% of light swirls and scratches. Touchless washes are fine.
Gravel dust wiped off dry
Some residents here live on gravel roads, which get sand in winter and throw dust in summer. Wipe that off a dry panel with a towel and the grit drags across the clear coat, leaving fine scratches. Light ones polish out. Scratches that go through the clear coat do not.
Scrubbing at sap and droppings
West Bloomfield regulates cutting in designated woodlands, and its 162 acre nature preserve has mature oak and hickory trees. Sap and bird droppings come with parking under branches. The marks usually come from scrubbing them off. A decontamination wash takes the sap off first, and polishing removes the light marring left behind.
Highway chips are a different job
Northwestern Highway ends at Orchard Lake Road and M-5 passes just west of the township, and both lead to I-696. Highway miles put stone chips in a front end. Correction is not repainting. It cannot fix rock chips, deep scratches or failed clear coat, and we will say so before you drive out.
Under the light
See what the inspection light sees.
Swirl marks hide in the shade and show up in the sun. Move the light across the paint, then step through a one-step polish and a multi-stage correction.

Questions
Paint correction in West Bloomfield: questions.
If yours is not here, call or text (586) 400-1303.
Can paint correction be done at my home in West Bloomfield?
No. Correction is done at the shop, in an enclosed bay under controlled lighting. We have to see the defects to remove them, and the panel has to stay free of dust while we polish. Detailing is the only work we do away from the shop, and from West Bloomfield we confirm even that by address.
How do I know if I need a one-step polish or more?
One pass with the machine takes out roughly 60 to 70% of light swirls and scratches. We sell it two ways: Polish & Protect, an exterior service from $344.99 with a 6 month sealant, and Luxury Refresh, a full detail with a one-step polish from $439.99. Both prices are for a coupe or sedan in average condition. Heavier defects need a multi-stage correction, quoted per vehicle after we see the paint. Two from our own files: a 1990 Mazda Miata that took a 2 step correction, and a 2021 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with heavy oxidation and water spots. More on the paint correction page.
Will paint correction fix rock chips or deep scratches?
No. Correction removes defects in the clear coat. It is not repainting. Rock chips, scratches that go through the clear coat and failed clear coat are beyond what polishing can do, and we would rather tell you that from a photo than after a drive of roughly 45 minutes.
Should I ceramic coat the car after correcting it?
If you are thinking about a coating, do both in one visit. Paint correction is included in every ceramic coating package and is done right before the coating goes on, so the corrected finish is the one that gets protected. It also saves you a second trip to the shop. See ceramic coating in West Bloomfield, or request a free quote.
